Organic loose shopping

Mini guide for beginners

Mum tells me how, in Italy until the 60s when she was a child, pasta, bread, milk and wine were bought loose . At the grocery store, pasta was bought in grams and wrapped in a yellow paper, so legumes were also taken from jute bags and weighed by the shopkeeper. They used to buy exactly what was needed. No brand winking from the shelves, no eye-catching packaging pushing you to overbuy. Then came advertising on tv and with the economic boom, huge chains of supermarkets and shopping centers opened their doors in Italy too.

As time goes by bulk shopping has been forgotten in favor of snacks, pasta and bread already packaged in too much plastic.

Luckily, or unluckily for the environment, only few years ago a new ecological awareness has arisen pointing the future of our planet to Zero Waste .

What is Zero Waste? And what does it consist of?

Zero Waste aims to minimize the production of waste by trying to reuse, recycle and compost the resources we use in our daily lives as much as possible. The goal of Zero Waste is not to eliminate the number of wastes, it would be an overly ambitious and perhaps utopic project, but rather to try taking small steps in that direction. To help our planet, we can therefore choose conscious purchases and opt for products packaged with recyclable materials or even better, prefer loose organic products .

Bulk shopping is one of the habits we can adopt to help the environment, a shopping that involves products without single-use or pre-packaged packaging. It allows you to buy the desired quantities of each product, thus reducing the impact of waste and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.

Let's see in detail the advantages of bulk shopping:

1. Waste reduction: Buying products in bulk significantly reduces the amount of plastic and paper packaging ending up in landfills. This helps to reduce the environmental impact and the production of non-biodegradable waste.

2. Saving money: buying bulk products can be cheaper than buying pre-packaged foods, since you only pay for the quantity needed, avoiding waste and reducing the overall cost of groceries.

3. Customization: loose shopping allows you to customize the quantity of products you wish to purchase. You can only take what you need, thus reducing the risk of having unused food that ends up wasted.

Using Le Radici del Bio shop , it is possible to choose certified organic foods , consult the technical data sheet of the products, verify their origin, choose the desired weight and receive everything comfortably at home.

The future of our planet depends on us. Let's go back to the past and resume our grandmothers' habit of loose shopping, a conscious and intelligent way of shopping.

Grandma's sideboard was made of light wood, the yellow glass cabinets shook every time she opened them. In a handmade basket there were sweets: Rossana and galatine, but the toffees were my favorite even if they stuck to the teeth. And there, among the plates of the good service and the cups taken with the points of the milk, grandmother kept the provisions: jars of peeled tomatoes vacuum-packed since September, sugar and coffee, half-crumbled biscuits in Snoopy's glass container, bunches of oregano dried upside down. Cooking with her was a ritual for me as a child. Taking rosemary and basil directly from the plants in the garden, watching the pizza dough rise under the white cloth, tasting the artichoke filling directly from the bowl, small gestures that keep a magical something for me. I have always considered the kitchen a sacred space. A place where magic happens. Healthy and natural ingredients from my childhood, which nowadays are difficult to recover. In this column we will once again open the grandmother's pantry in search of genuine ingredients. Each time we will discover the characteristics of each food, and its properties that will become allies of our body. Put on the apron and polish the ladles, let's start discovering the organic.
